Did you know? The word 'pajama' comes from the ancient language of Persia (modern day Iran) - meaning 'leg garment'. The word originally referred to baggy  trousers tied around the waist. To this day, very similar garments are worn by both men and women in countries such as India.

According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, pajamas were first introduced in England as 'lounging attire' around the 17th century  but they did not stay in fashion for very long. In around 1870 they reappeared as sleeping clothes for men and - the rest - as they say - is history.
